| Large 19th-century Sailor-made Walking Stick with Whale Tooth Handle |
| This mid-19th-century cane was likely made by a seaman on a whaling voyage. The shaft is a knobby wood stick with bark stripped off except for the top 2.25”. The pistol-grip pommel is carved from a sperm whale tooth and is inlaid with four baleen or ebony dots on the sides and a larger circle of abalone on the top. Between the pommel and shaft are two discs of baleen. The ferrule is also carved from a whale’s tooth. Length 35”. |
